The manager of a ferry that capsized on Monday in Lagos has been arrested for alleged negligence and failure to comply with safety regulations.

The Lagos Area Manager of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Sarat Braimah, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

Braimah said the arrest was effected as findings from a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, showed that the boat owned by Only God Ferry failed to adhere to operational safety standards and proper navigation procedures.

She said the arrest was aimed at ensuring accountability and setting a precedence for strict adherence to waterways regulations to prevent future occurrences.

The accident occurred when a fiber boat carrying 15 passenger collided with a wooden boat believed to be carrying 10 passengers as a result of obstructed vision.

According to reports, all 15 passengers on board the fibre boat were rescued safely, however, five passengers from the wooden boat sustained injuries, while five individuals remain unaccounted for.
