Many children have reportedly lost their lives in a stampede that occurred during a children’s Christmas party, in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
Thought the exact number of casualties is still unclear, the governor of Oyo, Seyi Makinde, confirmed that multiple lives were lost and some injured at the Christmas carnival hosted by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, an ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, on Wednesday at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Ibadan.
Makinde, who described the incident as a sad day for the Oyo State Government, commiserated with the parents that have lost their children.
He said the primary organisers of the event that led to the stampede have been taken into custody as investigations continue.
According to a report, chaos broke out when a large crowd surged forward to collect gifts and food, resulting in numerous children being trampled.
