Police confirm 22 dead in Anambra stampede

The Anambra state Police Command has confirmed that 22 persons died in Saturday’s stampede at the venue for the distribution of rice in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area.

Residents had gone to take part in the sharing of bags of rice donated by a philanthropist, Ernest Obiejesi, popularly known as Obijackson, through his foundation when the incident happened.

The police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, gave the number of casualties on Sunday after the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, visited the hospital where the victims of the tragic stampede were receiving treatment.

Ikenga said other people were injured during the stampede, but did not give details.

He said investigation into the unfortunate incident was ongoing.
