The Senate has invoked Section 157(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to recommend the removal of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, from office.
The decision followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele during plenary on Wednesday.
Opeyemi in his motion argued that the conduct of Danladi Umar fell short of the expectations of his office, which include maintaining high moral standards in government business and ensuring public officials adhere to principles of accountability and integrity.
According to the Senate Leader, key allegations against the embattled Chairman, included corruption and misconduct, with multiple petitions alleging corruption and misappropriation of funds.
He said the lawmakers invited Umar for questioning but he refused to appear.
When the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, put the motion to a vote, 84 senators who were present in the chamber voted in support.
Akpabio directed the Clerk of the Senate, Ben Akabueze, to communicate the Senate’s resolution to President Bola Tinubu for immediate action.
