Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has defended the decision of his government to enact Local Government Administration Law, which he has also given his assent.
His reaction followed the criticisms that have trailed the passage of the law, with many saying that the provision that creates a special account called State Joint Local Government Account is an attempt by the state government to undermine the Supreme Court judgment on the autonomy of the local government.
In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, October 15, Soludo addressed the concerns raised by critics, and clarified that the law seeks to codify the collaborative arrangements to promote transparency and accountability in the local government administration in the state.
According to the Governor, the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law, 2024, which was passed alongside the Anambra State Economic Planning and Development Law, 2024, was to give operational life to the recent Supreme Court judgment, and not to undermine it.
While describing the two laws as progressive legislations, the governor Soludo said the laws’ three key objectives are to achieve consistency with the Constitution and judgment of the Supreme Court; enhanced transparency and productive collaboration; and promotion of sustainable finance, democracy, and development at the local government.
The Anambra State Local Government Administration Law and the Anambra State Economic Planning and Development Law were assented to by the governor on Tuesday.
