Stakeholders commit to protection of women's right

Stakeholders at the three-day Southeast zonal meetings with community-based groups, partners and volunteers on Women's right advocacy, organised by the Women's Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), have assured of their commitment towards protection of women's right and fight against Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).

They assured of their commitment to the course on Thursday, July 18, 2024 on the second day of the meeting held in Awka, Anambra State.

The stakeholders noted that collaboration, commitment, diligence and mastery of the processes of project management were needed in delivery of the project on Women's right.

In a remark, the state commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo assured of the State Government's commitment to the protection of women's right.

Obinabo, who recounted several cases of Women's right abuse her ministry is handling, said the successes the state has recorded in curbing women's right violation were attributable to the confidence whistle-blowers have on the administration of professor Chukwuma Soludo, which has demostrated a political will on women's right Protection.

She said the state government will ensure that whistle-blowers on Women's right abuse are well protected.

The commissioner assured WRAPA of the support of her office towards ensuring that its objectives of strengthening social accountability support groups and improving grassroots networks for Advocacy and women's rights advancement in Nigeria and beyond are achieved.

While facilitating a session on the importance of project management skill, the project Office of WRAPA Nigeria, Christiana Eguma noted that a grasp of project management is important and necessary in ensuring that the goal of a project is achieved.

Eguma stated that accountability, quality control and record keeping are important in project management.

During an interactive session, participants drawn from the CSOs, media, religious groups, the clergy, traditional institutions, the disability community, the academia, the state government and volunteers from the states in the Southeast, took turns to share their experiences in project management. They concurred on the importance of accountability and diligence in project management.

Dr Jude Ohanele of Development Dynamics, who shared his experience managing a project funded by the Japanese government, noted that quality assurance and building trust are key to delivery in development work.

Mrs Virginia Obianyo of Civil Resource and Documentation Centre (CiRDDOC) Nigeria and WRAPA acting state director in Enugu, emphasized the importance of accountability.

Sharing her experience, the executive Director, Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC), Ugochi Agalaba Ehiahuruike noted that transpirancy, accountability and diligence are key in securing the trust of the donors.

She advised volunteers not to prioritise immediate economic benefits, but look up to the bigger picture.

The Permanent Secretary ministry budget and economic planning, Anambra state, Chinyere Nwabachili stated that feasibility study is foundational in project management.

According to her, it's the feasibility study that that helps in detailed and concrete planning.

During another session on fundraising, the communications assistant, WRAPA Nigeria, Paul Adama noted that getting funds from donors requires understanding the priority of donors, nurturing relationships and writing good proposals that meet the interest the donors.

The workshop which started on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 was aimed at fortifying WRAPA's institutional capacity and resilience, driving impactful change in safeguarding the rights of women and girls and further solidifying its leadership in the domain of women's rights advancement in Nigeria and beyond.

Participants were drawn from CSOs, religious and community based organisations, the clergy, the media, disability community, the academia, the state government and volunteers from states in the Southeast geopolitical zone.

The 3-day Southeast Zonal meetings with community-based groups, partners and volunteers on building VAWG Preventive Pathways, which held on July 17 - 19, was supported by Ford Foundation.

WRAPA Nigeria, which has intervened and touched the lives of abused women in Nigeria, is a leading voice in the advocacy and campaign against Violence against Women (VAW) in all its ramifications. As host and member of a 55 member Coalition, WRAPA has engaged in Parliamentary Advocacy and Public Education towards the enactment of the Violence Against Person Prohibition Law. It has also designed and coordinated projects and advocacy for increased political participation of women in Nigeria.
