Confusion has trailed the appointment of a new vice-chancellor for the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, following a disagreement between the authorities of the university and the Federal Ministry of Education over the appointment.
The governing council of UNIZIK, led by Greg Mbadiwe, had on Tuesday, appointed Professor Benard Odoh as the university’s Vice chancellor, amidst protest by various stakeholders of the institution, including members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the institution’s medical practitioners.
However, the appointments of Odoh as the Vice chancellor and Rosemary Ifeoma as the Registrar, were annulled by the Federal Ministry of Education on November 3, 2024.
According to the ministry, the appointments, did not follow the due process.
The ministry also directed the UNIZIK Council to stop all other appointments until the new Minister of Education takes office.
But the management of the University resisted the annulment of the appointments, insisting that all necessary protocols and procedures were observed in the appointments.
In a reply to the letter by the ministry of education, the Registrar of the institution held that invitations were duly issued to all relevant parties and representatives of the Federal Character Commission, external and internal council members, and various other stakeholders, took part in the process.
